Welcome to FileSociety

To download the PDF click here FileSociety Welcome Page PDF. Or continue below for the welcome information.

As a new invited user of FileSociety there are a few points to consider to maximize your speed and experience. FileSociety uses Aspera fasp™ technology to eliminate latency that greatly reduces your available bandwidth. Depending on your Internet service level (at home, wireless or at the office), there are controls and best practices available that can help you get the absolute highest performance from your existing Internet connection.

Edit

  • We created a Support Wiki located at support.filesociety.com as a resource for all FileSociety features and FAQs. When you arrive at the site the Home Page will give you an overview with important information and links to Aspera as well as installation instructions for the Plug-in. On the right of the site is menu for FileSociety features.

Edit

  • Another resource for FileSociety is our Blog of news, recent events and press, located at blog.filesociety.com. If you are at the Support Wiki already you simply select the Blog tab in the upper right of the page to go to the Blog. You can switch back by selecting the Support tab.

FileSociety Transfer Speeds

Edit

How Aspera Works to Speed File Transfers

  • The Aspera fasp™ protocol elimintates the typical overhead involved in transferring files over the internet. FTP uses TCP/IP as a protocol which is inherently slow, performs poorly, and gets slower over distance. fasp™ seeks to use the maximum available bandwidth on any network and does not degrade due to distance.

Edit

Known Issues with Home Cable and DSL

  • Home Cable and DSL providers typically place restrictions on their clients and limit the amount of available upload bandwidth. Typical results from home connections will be 3 Mbps – 20 Mbps depending on the amount of network traffic for download and 200 Kbps – 500 Kbps for upload. For this reason, it’s recommended that users use home connections predominantly for download purposes where there will be significant speed gains over FTP.

Edit

Upload and Download at the Same Time

  • If you pan to upload and download, we highly recommend doing one process at a time (i.e. do not download and upload at the same time if you have standard cable or DSL. We also recommend that if you have a home connection, to upgrade to premium services that free up most constraints that inhibit optimal simultaneous uploading and downloading. Most Internet providers have low cost options to upgrade to premium services that when combined with FileSociety’s can deliver transfer speeds up to 10-50x faster than FTP.

Edit

Transferring Files in Batches

  • With FileSociety you can transfer one file at a time or upload or download batches. We recommend selecting several files at once for download or upload to send in batches vs. individually. This allows the Aspera fasp™ technology to more efficiently manage the transfers often resulting in better speeds.

Edit

Using the Aspera Connect Transfer Window

  • When you are performing a file transfer you can go to the Aspera Transfer Window and further manage your upload or download. If you select the first blue graph button Image at the right, you will open the Transfer Monitor. You will see a graph of the transfer in progress. You can modify the speed of the transfer by lowering the slid bar at the left of the graph.

  • You can also stop and then restart your transfer by selecting the third blue button Image at the right. this can be very useful if you have one transfer in progress, but want to stop it and let another transfer take precedence. A transfer is not fully cancelled until you select the Clean Up button at the bottom of the Transfer Window.

How to Tell Whether Your Firewall is Blocking FASP

  • If your corporate firewall is blocking fasp™ (TCP port 22) you will receive an error message in the Aspera Connect Plugin Window. The error will typically indicate that the plugin was not able to authenticate using Port 22.
